You’ve probably heard the buzz for a while now. Between the internet, cryptocurrency, and blockchain, unless you’ve been buried under a rock you’re at least somewhat aware of decentralization.
This concept is one of the most important humanity can embrace moving into the future.
Decentralization is fundamental to our conscious evolution as a species. To unpack what that means, conscious evolution recognizes that humanity faces many present perils that must be overcome. As well, it understands that its environment is changing and so we must too.
This is not in reference to the natural environment (although there are certainly concerns here) but rather acknowledges that all of society is in a state of transition which we must adapt to if we are to thrive in the future. Play our cards right and we might overcome our limitations altogether.
Evolution occurs in response to the changing demands of a species’ environment, after all.
It is not just that things themselves are changing but our state of consciousness as well. We are moving out of the egoic age into a spiritual one. Rather than ego’s basis in separation, the paradigm is shifting to connection. We are recognizing the need for more holistic thought and action and with that, the transcendence of former means of control, including hierarchy and patriarchy.
What Decentralization Is
The best way to introduce decentralization is to define the conditions which have preceded it.
We are still in the egoic age of consciousness, based on a paradigm of separation that seeks to compartmentalize, control, and minimize change. As its structural form, it has chosen the most (vertically) segregated means of control and retention of power possible: the pyramid.
This structural form of the pyramid is perfect for ego for a couple of reasons.
One is that it is ideally suited as a power structure. A large base of foundational workers, with limited rights, does the dirty work and carries the heaviest burden. They are also the largest demographic in the whole structure, accomplishing immense work through their sheer size.
Above them is a tier of supervisors or managers, not nearly as large as the foundational base below them. This tier has more rights than the workers underneath them.
This layer has its own management above and so on until it ultimately leads to the board, cabinet, or dictator at the top. This person or limited group of people maintains all the control of everything in the organization underneath them. The structure works very well to maintain power in exactly the way that ego requires in this present state of collective consciousness.
Second, pyramids are one of the most stable forms possible. You can’t tip one over.
In its limitation, ego wants to reign for as long as it can—forever if possible. The pyramidal shape of hierarchy has served ego well by ensuring a structure that cannot be defeated (at least not from within the same paradigm).
The Shifting State of Everything
Nothing can ultimately stay the same forever.
Call it the Shift or the entering of the Age of Aquarius, humanity is transcending the limitation of the egoic age into a time of a far more spiritual state of consciousness. This essential and expanded state has none of the former qualities of separation and control but is instead based on connection and equality.
“Spirit” is natural and organic, like nature itself. There is no imposed order but is instead defined by absolute interconnection and balance.
Hierarchy makes way for the network.
Rather than rigid and strictly ordered, networks take the pyramid pieces and lay them all out on the ground. Instead of a house of cards, they are all spread out on the floor, arranged in a loose, amorphous shape that can be fluidly adjusted as needed.
Why It’s Important
One of the defining features of networks is decentralization. Power and resources are shifted out of a centralized power center and disseminated throughout in a manner that is far more conducive to the changing times of our spiritual age. They are also perfectly suited to our evolution.
Here are five ways that decentralization is so appropriate for our transition in the near future.
#1 Flexibility and Adaptability
The beauty of the network is that every piece can now have access to every other piece. This is highly flexible and adaptive. As humanity more fully enters the Shift, these are precisely the qualities we will need most. No longer will we be able to remain in fixed forms when everything around us is changing.
Decentralization allows humanity to evolve.
It breaks apart the fixedness we presently have which, by the way, is there precisely to ensure that the system never changes. Ego is crafty—and ruthless—like that.
Networks and decentralization take that means of power away from ego to give it to everyone.
#2 Complexity
Evolution allows an increased level of complexity in an overall system but it also requires an increased level of complexity (or at least its possibility) going into it. The pyramidal form of hierarchy is in this sense very crude and although there is a certain simple elegance to it, it is intrinsically lacking in necessary complexity.
A pyramid can have many parts and pieces (perhaps thousands or tens of thousands) but that doesn’t necessarily make the structure complex. Complexity derives, in part, not just from the number of parts but from all the possible connections between them.
Hierarchies limit this possibility.
Decentralized networks supply this necessary complexity, deriving immense possibilities as opposed to the very limited range hierarchies bring.
With this comes the means to adapt and, ultimately, to evolve.
#3 Autonomy
But we can’t just spread a bunch of “dumb” blocks around and have a complex system either. If the parts and pieces aren’t sufficiently autonomous then connecting them together in even the most optimal ways may produce more compromised results than before.
However, decentralization equips every node with sufficient power and resources that each may be powerful in and of itself. Decentralized networks enable resources to be shared throughout. If there is a deficiency in one area it can be immediately supplied by others such that none are truly compromised and all are benefited.
Now bring them together in new arrangements and anything is possible.
#4 Synergy
Although every node may be essentially autonomous, this is not to say they are homogenous. Every team has its own dynamic qualities consisting of strengths and a variety of perspectives and it is this subtle trait that fuels the possibilities between them.
Every team member and every team has its own energy or signature frequency that makes it unique. Compose these frequencies in just the right way and you get powerful qualities such as harmony, resonance, and synergy.
Hierarchy, however, segregates and isolates all this energetic power. This is, of course, by design.
Indeed, ego’s function in many ways (not just organizationally) is to dampen frequencies. Rather than let a thing register at its own natural harmonic, ego quenches the vibration like a finger pressed to a tuning fork. Such freedom and individual expression are out of the question for ego because its nature is too controlling.
Let things ring true, however, and they come alive. Energies mingle and oscillate and build in power through resonance and new realities are allowed to emerge.
#5 Transparency
A beautiful thing about decentralized networks is the degree of transparency inherent in them. With walls no longer separating each individual or department or business or agency, each is allowed to operate with the greatest ease possible. This allows more to get done, quicker, and without bureaucracy.
But another crucial quality emerges as well. Trust builds and in the absence of doubt, production can be optimized. Proprietary secrets and patents become a thing of the past as humanity comes together as one to evolve beyond all the former limitations.
With the lack of former opacity, everyone stays in check. No organization has anywhere to hide anything at all. This may be somewhat uncomfortable, especially at first. But like locker room nudity, we’ll soon find it natural and normal. And when we have nothing to hide on the outside we begin to have nothing to hide on the inside.
Openness becomes the new defining quality and as we begin to know the inner nature of everyone around us, true connection and functionality are enabled.
If one should doubt this, merely consider what it is like when secrets reign in a family or between a couple. It stifles growth and vitality and slowly begins to kill it.
Decentralization helps to ensure transparency, honesty, and trust grow strong.
Key Takeaways: Humanity has been in an age of ego for several thousand years. This time has been marked by the retention of control and power at the expense of many others. The most enduring format for most organizations (churches, governments, corporations) has been the hierarchy.
However, all the former means of ego are becoming outdated, through their unsustainability and ineffectiveness within the new paradigm. This more spiritual state of consciousness eschews the former ways of ego including hierarchy.
In its place is the decentralized network where every node becomes equipped and empowered (autonomy) to engage all others in a truly interconnected manner.
Decentralization represents humanity’s optimal means forward.
